How this compost calculator works
This calculator sizes the compost you need to amend garden soil, top-dress a lawn, or fill a raised bed. Compost is decomposed organic matter that feeds the soil. The tool reports the amount in cubic yards and in tons, so you can order either way.
The estimate starts with the area you are covering and the depth you want. The calculator multiplies area by depth to get a volume in cubic feet. It divides that number by 27 to convert to cubic yards. It then multiplies by the material's density to give a weight in tons.
Compost runs about 0.5 tons per cubic yard as a planning figure. Compost is light. It weighs far less per yard than soil, sand, or gravel, because it is made of broken-down organic matter. Moisture raises the weight, so a wet, finished compost weighs more than a dry, fluffy one.
Depth is entered in inches, so the tool converts inches to feet before the volume step. A 3-inch layer becomes 0.25 feet. This keeps the units correct and the tonnage right.
The last step adds an overage allowance. The default is 10 percent. It covers uneven ground, settling into the soil, and material lost at the edges. Compost sinks in as it is raked and worked, so a small cushion keeps you from running short.
The result gives you the cubic yards and the tons of compost for the job. Cubic yards match how landscape yards sell bulk compost. Tons match a weighed truck ticket. Enter your area and depth to see both totals, then order the amount that fits your supplier.
