How this flagstone calculator works
The estimate begins with the area you are covering. The calculator divides that area by how much a ton of stone covers to give the tons to order. Flagstone is flat natural stone for patios, walkways, and stepping areas. It is sold by the ton, so the tool reports the tonnage you need.
You enter the area in square feet and pick a thickness. Coverage per ton depends on that thickness, because thicker stone weighs more for the same surface area. The calculator holds a coverage figure for each thickness and uses it to turn your area into tons.
The math is simple. The tool takes your square feet and divides by the coverage per ton. A larger area needs more tons. A thicker stone lowers the coverage per ton, so it raises the tonnage for the same area.
The last step adds a cutting and fitting allowance. The default is 10 percent. Flagstone is trimmed and fitted piece by piece, so some stone is lost at the edges and in the joints. The allowance covers that loss, so you order enough to finish the surface.
The result is the tons to buy. Suppliers weigh flagstone at the yard and sell it by weight, so the ton figure matches the sales ticket. You can check that figure against a supplier quote before you order. Enter one area at a time for an odd shape, then add the results. Round the final number up to the next practical amount, because a short load stops the job and a partial second delivery costs another trip.
