How this paver base calculator works
This calculator sizes the two layers that sit under a paver patio or walkway. The bottom layer is a compacted crushed-stone base. The top layer is a thin bedding sand that the pavers rest on. The tool figures each layer and reports the total in tons.
The estimate begins with the area you are covering and the depth of each layer. The calculator multiplies area by depth to get a volume in cubic feet. It divides that number by 27 to convert to cubic yards. It then multiplies by the material's density to give a weight in tons.
Each layer uses its own density. Crushed stone base weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Bedding sand weighs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. The calculator runs the math twice, once for the base and once for the sand. It adds the two weights together for a combined total.
Depth is entered in inches, so the tool converts inches to feet before the volume step. A 4-inch layer becomes 0.333 feet. This keeps the units correct and the tonnage accurate.
The last step adds a waste allowance. The default is 10 percent. This covers compaction, uneven ground, and small spills during the pour. You can raise or lower the allowance to match your site.
The result gives you the tons of base stone, the tons of bedding sand, and the combined total. Use these numbers when you place an order with a quarry or landscape yard. Bulk material is sold by weight, so a tonnage figure is exactly what the supplier needs. Enter your patio size and layer depths to see your totals.
