How this pea gravel calculator works
This calculator turns a bed measurement into an order you can place. Pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone about 3/8 inch across, spread over an area at a set depth. The tool takes that area and depth and returns the volume and weight you need. It reports both cubic yards and tons.
The math starts with area times depth. You enter the length and width of the area, and the calculator finds the square footage. Depth is entered in inches, so the tool converts inches to feet first. A 2-inch layer becomes 0.167 feet. Area times that depth gives a volume in cubic feet.
Next the tool converts to the units suppliers use. It divides the cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. A cubic yard is a block 3 feet on every side. The calculator then multiplies the cubic yards by about 1.35 tons per cubic yard to reach a weight in tons.
The last step adds an overage allowance. The default is 10 percent. This covers uneven ground, stone that settles into the soil, and gravel lost past the edges. You can raise or lower the allowance to match your site.
The result gives you cubic yards and tons for the area. Pea gravel is often sold by weight, so the tonnage figure is what a landscape yard needs. The cubic yard figure helps when a yard sells by volume instead.
Because pea gravel is rounded, it does not compact the way angular base stone does. You do not order extra for packing. You order for the loose depth you want to see. Enter your area and target depth to read your totals.
